Grand Wash Capitol Reef NP & Torrey to Escalante.....May 3rd & 4th 2017...

This is the vista that greets us every time we drive from our base in Torrey.....spectacular (sorry running out of adjectives !!) and it's not even officially part of the National Park....
Today we are hiking 2.5 miles (5 miles round trip) through the Grand Wash Canyon into the heart of Capitol Reef...
It's a beautiful blue sky morning and perfect temperature (mid 60's) for the hike...can imagine in summer it will be incredibly hot.....

I'm hoping the photos will try to convey the sheer size of this canyon....
Wally/Waldo again....

Yorkieman trying to convey the power of water carving and undermining the canyon wall and the sheer size...
Not that we want to experience the danger but we would love to be able to see the wash after a rain storm or awash (excuse the pun) with snow melt...
Beautiful "Desert Varnish"...

Spring is still blooming and so much colour with so little evidence of water....
Our final drive out of the National Park and still in awe of this vast and spectacular area...sorry for repeats of adjectives but....
We needed to top our phone Verizon card and nearest store 18 miles away but that's ok as it's a lovely drive through the valley (no pics) and complete change of scenery and landscape.....cattle, sheep and bison farms...
Tomorrow we will move back along Scenic Route 12 to Escalante and our home base for the next week....
Thursday May 4th.....and back at 9, 400ft elevation and the snow line...
Our route today is 65 miles to Escalante up and over the mountains.....
Coffee and cookie break at pull out in town of Boulder...
A view from the HogBack on Scenic Route 12.....lots of scenic pullouts even for our size...
Return journey through what is for us the most scenic part of route 12...
And climbing back up through the slick rock area....we can never tire of this stunning area....
We arrive early afternoon in Escalante and our home for the next week....
It's sunny and warm and we are in an incredible part of the world....
Until the next post...
The very Happy Campers...

  1. Hi Sue & Michael,
Good to see that you are still getting plenty of exercise,
Must say the rig is keeping remarkably clean. It must be invaluable Sue to have your assistant Wally/Waldo to give scale to your great pics.
    Keep on trucking enjoy.

  3. Hi Campers! Looking at pictures of sunshine is doing me no good at all! It may well have been a dry period here in UK but where is the sun? Now we have had rain and more threatened. Stock up on that Vitamin D for your return - unless you can bring it with you? Now there's a challenge.
